Fast service, many vegetarian options, and they have Diet Dr. Pepper! I like their enchilada sauce better than several other restaurants I have been to in the KC Metro area. The salsa that comes with the chips is also better than the average Mexican restaurant.

Wife and I got El Maguey take-out last night. This time, the wife got chicken enchiladas and had some rice with her meal. I had the same meal I had before. The wife said the rice was great! She also really enjoyed the chicken. So, like I sad, El Maguey could and did earn one more star after trying the usual staples of our Mexican restaurant visits. Highly recommended. Good place. Good service.

This place has wonderful atmosphere and an even better menu. Great food in a hurry. I disagree with some of the reviews. Also they make great drinks. Come to visit yourself.

Good food. Fast service. Huge selection!. The food here is pretty good. The food came out maybe 5 mins or less after it was ordered. I don't know if it was pre-made or they were mind readers, but it came out quick. The food was actually pretty good. I went to this place because the original place I wanted to go to wasn't opened yet. I was quite surprised at the taste of the food and would definitely go back. They have a large variety to choose from, but it can be a little overwhelming. I was thinking that maybe they have too much of a variety on the menu, but I do like options so I won't fault them for that. Takes a little longer to figure out what you want though. This isn't the best or most authentic Mexican food I've had, but it's still pretty good.

Great local Mexican food! Speedy service and delicious food. The three dishes I recommend the most are the Enchiladas Supremas, Cazuelon (little pricey thoug, but good), and any of their fajitas. Good price, good food!

They have never let me down. Good food, good value, good service. My wife and I eat here at least once a month.

The services is lacking. Our waitress decided to talk to all the other wait staff instead of taking our order. Don't get the carnitas, they are DRYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!! The salsa is no bueno. The queso is the consistency of white water. Taco Bell ranks higher than this place.

I do not usually get on here to rate any restaurants, but I had to make an exception. The chips were not fresh. The beef was bland. I should have been scared when I saw crappy pictures of their food in their menu. That is usually a sign of a bad place to eat. The food was mediocre at best. I would have rather flushed my $20 bill down the toilet than have spent it at El Maguey. I mean no disrespect to the people that do like this place. My advice though, when you see El Maguey, keep on driving.

Not my favorite. Ok ok.....you won't catch me eating there again. Not the worst, but I'll pass. Eating here was like eating a taco bell lab experiment gone wrong. It was just off. I had tacos, but I felt like I was eating a taco stuffed with meatloaf. The salsa was horrible. Watered down and boring. I have to back up a fellow reviewer....the staff is just plain rude.

We used to eat here all the time. But it's been a year since we've been to El Maguey. First, it was Sunday and they were super busy. Took forever to get our food, and my Husband's came out first..the rest of the table had to wait another 10 min. for the rest of our food. The salsa had changed, this version was too garlicky for my taste. It seems someone in the kitchen has a heavy hand w/ the salt...I tried 3 dishes at our table and they all were oversalted in my opinion. I don't think we'll be back, the food seemed mediocre at best

Saturday I did something I never thought I'd ever do. But let's start at the beginning. I went to El Maguey on Saturday afternoon for lunch with my Mom and Boyfriend, and Mom and I have been to this location before granted it'd been a while. The boyfriend warned us and we told him Oh you haven't been to THIS one. Well let's just say I'm still hearing about it. I don't know what's happened they had a great restaurant. I ordered the lunch fajitas so did Mom and the boyfriend (fearful) ordered a burrito and taco, I asked for an order of Guacamole. He returned with the "guacamole" it was green and BROWN. First instinct - YUCK! I stirred it with a chip and noticed NO: Onion, Tomato, Chile's nothing just mashed avocado's and what looked like last nights avocado's. So I don't send things back I just have it deducted when it happens. Then our lunch came out I was going to say something about the guacamole and I could tell by his face he saw we hadn't eaten any of it...and the "fajitas" they served us were a mess. The chicken were tiny little strips of white meat that was curled up not fajita chicken. The veggies looked as though they'd been boiled not grilled. There was a huge piece of onion, 2 pieces of green pepper and a couple slices of tomato (yes slices of tomato). I couldn't eat it. Mom was braver than I and tried a bite, she asked the server for some Cumin to season her food with, it has no flavor. The server she asked said he didn't know what it was...Mom said ask the cook they'll know. He brought back Season Salt. So there you go, your in a Mexican restaurant and they don't have Cumin it's time to leave. So I got our server, explained that this is unacceptable...tipped him and left. The boyfriend only had a bite or two of his burrito and waited for us to come to the same conclusion. I don't know what happened they used to be so good. We recommended them to everyone, I loved their guacamole never had a bad experience or bad plate of food. The problem is, in this city you can't swing a cat without hitting Mexican restaurant...you can't serve this garbage and expect to stay in business.

Psst. I think the servers here have psychic powers. I've long been a fan of El Maguey - the name of my third period class could have been "Margaritas, Sombreros and the Art of Ditching" my senior year of high school. I consider myself an expert on their offerings. (Incidentally, it is not pronounced El MAH-gway, it is El Mah-GAY. After the plant that makes Mezcal.) El Maguey locations are pretty hit or miss. The menu is consistent, the salsa is always red, strangely uniform and a little bland (It comes free, so I don't complain) and the jumbo margaritas are always obscenely jumbo. Service and cleanliness vary. What sets this location apart is the freakishly fast service. I've been here many times now and EVERY time we come in, we marvel at the speed of their staff. We're seated quickly, drinks are on the table momentarily and I doubt if we have ever waited more than ten minutes after ordering our food, for our plates to be on the table, steaming hot and scrumptious. Freaky. It begs the questions: do they know what I am going to order before I order it? Are they Olympic waitstaff? How on Earth do they DO that? El Maguey food is decent, reasonably priced Mexican. Nothing more, nothing less. The Beef Fajita Quesadilla is always a good choice, and you can order the Burrito Rio Grande with all white cheese. Wait. Did I not mention the white cheese yet? Best. Cheese. Evah. The decor is typical Meximerican joint - sombreros and panchos, garish pinks and oranges, plaintive Mexican rock/folk piped in. It's a great hang for groups - friends and fishbowl sized margaritas are always a good move.

Finally an alternative to Tex-Mex North of the river. Plenty of parking, greeted and seated promptly upon arrival which was around 7 PM. The margaritas come in various sizes and were complimented by my fellow diner. I had fresh brewed Ice tea (somebody has to drive). Like most Mexican restaurants you get chips and salsa which were very good! We had guacamole for an appetizer which was very tasty, a generous portion and very inexpensive. The Tamales are AWESOME. Next time I will just order two and make a meal out of them. I appreciate the fact that you can purchase Huevos Rancheros any time of day. Some restaurants and cooks get so uppity about cooking a couple of eggs. The restaurant was very clean and our server was excellent. If you want to have real flan for dessert this is as close you are going to get in the Northland. It is made on property and is simply perfect. We are planning bi-monthly repeat trips. Prices are very reasonable .

Ummmmm.. I require two key elements in a Mexican restaurant: 1) White cheese (grated and melted) 2) Yummy salsa While El Maguey offers delicious cheese, and are not chincy, their salsa tastes more like spaghetti sauce than salsa- major disappointment. Also, the wait staff is not friendly. They were unable to understand my beverage order, very little English happening, and brought me the wrong drink 3 times! Our server was angry at me for "being difficullt" and was very rude. He threw my glass after leaving our table for the last time. Nice. Never again, El Maguey. I will miss your cheeeese.

Its hard to give above a 2 when your food comes out 3 minutes after you order. Pretty sure they have a lot of microwaves. That being said the food doesn't taste terrible. So if your needing a QUICK Mexican meal stop here, if you want fresh made to order Mexican keep driving.

On my third visit to El Maguay, I realized that it isn't that good. The tacos are nothing more than crumbly ground beef with a little shredded cheese. Ditto for the enchiladas. The staff is Mexican American, which is always a good indication. Mexican Americans eat here, so that's another good sign. But I can't recommend the place.

I've been here twice. The first time I thought it was horrible so I gave them another chance. It was worse the second time. Couldn't believe it! If you like real Mexican food stay away from this place. If you don't mind worse than mediocre, this is the place for you

While I don't expect five star service here, our last visit was enough to make us never return. Our food was brought to the table behind us and even though they told the runner it wasn't what they ordered, they accepted it because "it looked good" and the runner left it. When their server returned, one of them sent his food back - including my toddler's lunch, and asked for his burrito, which still came out before our server addressed the issue. She finally stopped by to tell us our food was almost ready but never acknowledged the mistake. She finally brought out two out of three of our dishes. One was cold and had obviously been the same one the other table sent back. The other was so overdone it was also obvious it had been under the heat lamp since the other table returned it. My husband's food never arrived. At this point I asked for the check to pay for the appetizer we had already eaten but would not be paying for food that sat at someone else's table. The only decent thing they did during our entire visit (in which they still never acknowledged their mistakes) was tell us we didn't need to pay. Good riddance, El Maguey.

The kids and I have eaten at several different El Maguey's because it is a chain. As far as the chain goes the menu is EXCELLENT. But amazingly enough I've found the food quality can vary quite a bit from place to place. This El Maguey is usually consistently good and the service is fast. If you're in the mood for something simple we love the bean dip with a side of flour tortillas Yum! The verde enchiladas are also great. The atmosphere is great as well.

I eat here often and I really enjoy the food. The wait staff is very friendly and courteous. The food is quite good, traditional Mexican as well as Tex Mex, and is a very good value for their large size plates. Taco Tuesdays are fun and a great value. The atmosphere and decor are very cute as well. Each little area is it's own little pavilion, which is a really neat idea and quite different than most restaurants that I've been to.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
